Description: Describes receiving a Human Rights award in 1999 mainly for her work with the YWCA. Attributes her human rights involvement to a love of history from primary school. Mentions the role of teachers and family in this. Describes involvement in the Student Christian Movement (SCM) at university. Notes that this was during World War II and issues of whether to fight or be a pacifist were uppermost in people's minds. Describes being acting president of the SCM and mentions overseas branches. Talks about being asked to be the Secretary to the Committee of the International Students Service which was involved in bringing Jewish students from Europe. Recalls her scholarship to Oxford and ongoing involvement with the International Students Service including as secretary in Geneva. Describes the work done helping relocate students displaced by World War II in the US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Talks about returning to New Zealand and working for the SCM going round schools. Talks about the beginnings of an awareness of the importance of the international role of Asia. Discusses working for the YWCA and a scheme established to help young Greek immigrant women. Describes a similar scheme helping orientate people from the Tokelau Islands into NZ society. Recalls the international YWCA Conference held in Australia in 1967. Comments that this was a good experience in terms of encouraging interdenominational contact. Describes travelling to overseas YWCA meetings including to Madagascar, the Congo (Zaire), Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and Uganda, the challenges involved and the effect on the YWCA and similar organisations of politics in these countries. Talks about protests and appeals by the World Wide YWCA to help South Africa. Comments on the satisfaction of working with people of different religions and of working with a Christian organisation. Description: Vasilios (Basil) Kaloyanis, known as Luckie, born Bucharest, Romania, outlines family background - parents, Greek, had delicatessen shop in Bucharest but, because of Communist regime, family returned to Greece. Recalls childhood in Bucharest. Discusses Russian take-over of Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary and Romania after World War II. Describes move to Island of Tinos, Greece. Recalls applying through International Refugee Organisation for entry to New Zealand. Travelled on the `Goya' (a Norwegian immigrant ship), arriving in Wellington 1951 during Waterside lock-out. Refers to George Raizis, a fellow passenger. Recalls parents and 2 children stayed at Pahiatua Camp, later moving to Wellington to be with established Greek community. Describes first job at Columbo Radio Factory, Courtenay Place, later joining General Motors, Petone and in 1956 joined trams, Wellington City Transport. Describes; training and relationship between motorman and conductor; double saloon trams, comparing Fiducia with other trams; training for motorman ticket; training as bus driver by Jimmy Edmonds - compares driving buses with trams. Description: George Raizis who was born Sulina, Romania gives details of Greek family background. Recalls start of war, June 1941. Talks about experiences during bombing, was sent to school in Tulcea. Mentions nationalisation 1948. Describes fighting between Germans and Russians, refers to German mines in Danube. Recalls celebrations when peace was declared. Left Romania in 1950 and recalls: landing in Chios Island; refugee camp; going to Athens; travelling to New Zealand on the `Goya', arriving 1951 during Waterside lockout; Pahiatua camp for six weeks; employment with Forestry at Otautau; move to Wellington and joining Tramways 1954, describes training as a conductor and obtaining `tram ticket' (Tram driver's licence and bus driver's ticket 1961. Recalls Wellington trams ceasing to run (May 1964) and last tram which was driven by Wellington Mayor, Sir Francis Kitts. Describes various bus and tram routes and difficulties caused by narrow streets. Mentions accident at corner Hopper & Webb Streets (1952/1953).
