Description: Album of scenic photographs, chiefly taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, with views of the North Island and South Island. North Island scenes include a number of tourist views of Maori, showing carved meeting houses; a group performing a haka; two women demonstrating the hongi; a young woman wearing a feather cloak, hei tiki and huia feathers, and holding a mere; a group of young boys in a haka pose; a woman smoking a pipe; a group of children bathing in a hot pool at Ohinemutu; and Mr. Nelson's carved house at Whakarewarewa. Other North Island scenes show Mount Taranaki, the Auckland wharves, Lake Waikaremoana, and a man fishing at the Ohau Channel, Rotorua. South Island views cover Lakes Wakatipu, Manapouri and Te Anau; the Tasman Glacier; peaks in the Southern Alps; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; a team of four horses with a laden Cobb & Co coach on a ferry, crossing the Mangahua [i.e. Inangahua] River, the Lyell River Bridge and Hawks Crag, all in the Buller Gorge. The last few images are exterior and interior views of the Dunedin Railway Station soon after it was finished in 1906. Inscriptions: Album page - John T. Description: Album of photographs relating to a trip taken by a group travelling on the first "Motor Reliability Contest" in 1906; probably created and in part photographed by Robert M McKnight. The contest involved ten cars (4 Daracqs, 2 Cadillacs, and 1 Rover, 1 steam car, 1 Oldsmobile and 1 Leyland) travelling 400 miles from Auckland to Taupo and back. Photographs relating to the contest, including scenes photographed during the trip are on even numbered pages from 2 to 36, possibly taken by R M McKnight in 1906; odd numbered pages from 1 to 63, were taken by unidentified professional photographers, circa the 1880s to 1890s; all relating to the route taken on the 1906 road contest. Most of the earlier photographs are scenes in the thermal area around the Wairakei and Bay of Plenty Regions and include images of the Pink and White Terraces taken before and after the 1886 Tarawera Eruption. One of these earlier images shows "Macandrew and party at Wairakei." Views of the Motor Reliablity Contest show scenes taken on the route; groups of people involved; lineups of all ten cars; and one car fording a river. Phtotgraphed by Thomas Pringle in about 1908 According to John C M Cresswell (Maori Meeting Houses of the North Island, P.C.S. Publications, Auckland, 1977), the present meeting house at Mourea Pa was "reconstructed in 1914 from timbers of an older house of the Ngati Pikiao." Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber, chiefly between 1934 and 1947, but including copies of some of his earlier photographs. Views include trips in the North and South Islands, and views of his home and family, especially in Whiteman's Valley Road and the area around Silverstream. Also various scenes of floods (Hutt River), and storm damage. Photographs associated with roads and railways include steam locomotives, tunnels, bridges and viaducts, some under construction. Among the trip photographs are views of Ngaruawahia, including King Koroki's house (opened in 1938) and the Maori Parliament House.
