Date: [ca 1860]-1933
Reference: PA1-q-922
Description: Album relating to the McElwain, Otway, and Whiteley families. Half of the album is filled with unidentified family photographs. Included with these are photographs of orchestal groups and choirs. These are the Auckland Orchestral Society, the Wesley Orchestral Society, the band and orchestra of the Auckland Infantry Regiment 1917, what is probably the Pitt Street Methodist Church choir, and the 1ZR Auckland Broadcasting Choir. Other photographs relate to the Pitt Street Methodist Church. As well as interior views of the building there are photographs relating to the Sunday school, the bible class, and the organ and organist. There are photographs of the memorial erected in 1923 at Pukearuhe, to commemorate the Methodist missionary, Reverend John Whiteley. The second half of the album contains newspaper clippings relating to Reverend John Whiteley, and documents in the form of marriage certificates, church membership tickets, death notices, letters, music programms and other items relating to the McElwain, and Otley families. The music programms relate to the Wesley Orchestral Society from 1910 to 1911, and the Auckland Harmonic Orchestra for 1912, though others do not include the year date. Other music related documents are invitations to join the the 1ZR Broadcasting Choir, and programmes for performances of the choir dated 1931 and 1932. Judging from the predominant contents of this album it was probably compiled by James Whiteley McElwain, or a member of his immediate family. James McElwain was a grandson of John Whiteley. He was a trained violinist, and was a member at various times in his life of the Auckland Orchestral Society, the Wesley Orchestral Society, the Auckland Harmonic Orchestra, the YMCA Orchestra, and for two years the New South Wales State Conervatorium Orchestra, from which he resigned in 1930.
