Description: Cyril Bythsea Crossland born Makarewa, Southland 1915. Recalls enlisting for World War II, going to Burnham Camp October 1939, and leaving New Zealand, February 1940. Describes enlistment process and gives reasons for going into Army Service Corps. Describes travelling to Egypt on the `Sobieski' and arrival at Maadi Camp. Refers to DRs [Despatch Riders]. Talks about going to Greece, attacks by German air force and evacuation from Greece and going to Crete. Recalls German invasion, 20 May 1941 and withdrawal to Galatas. Briefly mentions being captured by Germans in Sfakia (Sphakia) and mentions location of prison camp and food available. Refers to German control of Maleme aerodrome. Discusses experiences during escape, being caught and going to Stalag VIIIB in Germany. Describes living standards of Cretan people. Recalls seeing trainloads of Jews going to concentration camps. Talks about liberation by Americans and arrival in England. Recalls meeting future wife, Ailsa Hanson, marriage at Eketahuna in 1946 and return to Invercargill to work on future wife's farm. Description: George Harold (Mick) Gilling born Hawera 1907. Outlines family background - father made sadlery. Was four years old when family moved to farm in the Waikato and recalls very happy memories of farm. Commenced school at Gordontoun aged 5 and believes father was instrumental in getting the school established. Recalls developing Rheumatism at the age of 11 years. Describes early working life, leaving school aged 14, working on a farm at Puketaha, joining a firm and learning the trade of body building (buses and farm implements) and working on a service station as a shareholder in Te Kuiti. Recalls never being without a job during the Depression. Talks about interest in Child Welfare and being appointed as Field Officer to Child Welfare in Palmerston North in 1939. Refers to Children's Court and Borstal. Mentions Chief Justice Stout and Magistgrate, Dan Sullivan. Describes work in Greece [1945-1946] as part of CORSO team, mainly distribution of goods from America and survey of prisons. Recalls many incidents from prisons and describes conditions. Explains why prisoners didn't qualify for assistance from UNWRA (United Nations Work and Relief Association). Describes building mudbrick homes in Greece. Recalls trip back to New Zealand, referring to the `Orbita' a British troop ship. Description: Elsie Winifred Montgomery (nee Steven) born Vancouver, Canada 1920. Recalls coming to New Zealand ca 1932, working with the Hawkes Bay Electric Power Board and decision to train as a nurse at the outbreak of WWII, training at Wellington Hospital. Backgrounds decision to volunteer for relief work in Greece. Refers to Colin Morrison who headed the CORSO team which was an adjunct of UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Service). Recalls setting sail on the SS Mooltan December 1945 and mentions Dr Sylvia Chapman who was team leader. Describes life on board ship and stop overs in Ceylon, Bombay and Cairo. Talks about work conditions and customs in Greece. Comments on the amount of gypsies in northern parts of Greece and describes their needs. Discusses the political situation, the communist villages, nationalist villages, the civil war and the problems arising. Recalls return home in 1946 and marriage to Ian Montgomery.
