Mt View Asylum

Opened in 1873 to replace the Karori Lunatic Asylum, which was established in 1854. Mount View Lunatic Asylum was situated on the current site of Government House, Rugby Street, Wellington. Patients were transferred to Porirua Lunatic Asylum and other asylums, before Mount View's closure in 1910.

Description: The papers include correspondence with government ministers and prison officials relating to the administration of prisons, suggested reforms and the cases of individual prisoners; correspondence with prisoners and ex-prisoners relating to their circumstances and rehabilitation and correspondence relating to the work of the Wellington Prisoners' Aid and Rehabilitation Society. There is a limited amount of correspondence with inmates of mental hospitals. Also fragmentary drafts of a proposed autobiography including accounts of aspects of Arnold's work with prisoners and mental hospital inmates and newspaper cuttings.
