Whakahara homestead was established in 1860. It was located north of Tokatoka on the edge of the Northern Wairoa River, Northland, and was one of the first trading stations established in the region. Description: Bushmen William Mathews, Dan Galvin, and Jo Simkin photographed by G E Edwards of Tokatoka in about 1909. The axes are Kelley brand, very long in the blade, good for scarfing, and four and a half pounds in weight. The men have just finished `sniping' the nose on the kauri log. This photographe was most likely taken at the Bore Creek bush workings. Logs were `sniped' to make it easier for bullock teams to haul them. Quantity: 1 b&w copy photographic print(s).
