Description: Gold dredges, gold sluicing, and machinery associated with gold mining in the South Island. Includes a few photographs taken in Australia, particularly the Pioneer Tin Mine in Tasmania. Inserted in a pocket in the front of the album are 19 loose prints, chiefly showing various claims in the North Island, some of which are taken by H J Locke. Also named in these images are the Saxon Mine and Ivanhoe Mine. Pinafore Claim was located at Waiotahi, Thames. Cambria Claim was a gold mine located in Thames. Gold King Dredge was on the Clutha River near Roxburgh circa 1899. Title supplied by Library. Date range estimated partly on dates that dredges were known to be operating. Description: Black and white photographic print, photographed by John McEachen and inscribed on reverse of mount 'Mr M Cable, 7 Anstey Road, Reading Berks, England'. The postmarks show that the print was posted from Port Chalmers on 21 October 1906. On the front of the mount is the printed title 'Fraser Flat Co's dredge, Alexandra; Largest Gold Dredge in the World. Total Length, 131 feet; Beam, 50 feet; Depth, 9 feet 6 inches; Height of Poppet Framing from Deck, 70 feet 6in. F W Payne, Designer. H F Nees & Co., Builders.' Above the photograph are 'With H F Nees and Co.'s Compliments - Wishing You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.' The dredge is shown as being built behind a line of tailings on an unidentified river, but which is probably the Clutha. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s) mounted on card.
