Description: Christina Dorothy (Dorothy) Hardy (nee Mackay) born Gore. Recalls attending Tapanui District High School and working for a firm in Heriot, Otago Farmers before commencing to train as a nurse at Dunedin Hospital 1939. On completion of training specialised in theatre work and in 1944 volunteered for WWII. Describes time at Burnham Camp, experience at Taiaroa Heads for one month and eventually leaving New Zealand on the Maunganui hospital ship. Describes journey and stop overs en route, eventually arriving at destination, Helwan Hospital. Gives details of hospital, uniforms, conditions, type of injuries, treatment for burns and social life. Mentions Mess dances and the New Zealand Club in Cairo. Refers to Lady Freyberg and the Tuis. Talks about meeting future husband and gives reasons for his Maori name, Kiwa, even though he wasn't Maori. Recalls being transferred to northern Italy, a place called Senigallia near Ancona. Recalls villages being badly bombed. Talks about Dr Charles Burns from Wellington. Recalls shortly after arriving in Italy contracting Amoebic [Dysentery] which resulted in finally being sent home on the Tamaroa (ship) arriving New Zealand March 1946.
