Description: Photographs of Hawai'i, Samoa and New Zealand, taken by various photographers circa 1880s and 1890s, including John Richard Morris, John Davis, F Finch and Josiah Martin. Inserted in an envelope is a hand-written list of photos, but these seem to bear no relationship to the album. The list includes places in New Zealand (none of which are in this album), Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, New Caledonia and Fiji (again none of which are shown in this album). The photographs of Hawai'i include Iolani Palace in Honolulu, and Queen Lili'uokalani; Samoan images show children, a waterfall at Falefa near Apia, and a group of dancers in traditional dress. Images of New Zealand include landscapes, Maori children, a hongi with two women, and a collage taken by Josiah Martin of images of Maori chiefs, waka and meeting houses at Parihaka and Ohinemutu. Description: Album of tourist views of New Zealand and the sub-Antarctic Islands, chiefly taken by John Richard Morris, Jnr, circa 1890s. Places and subjects listed above where identified. The Sub-Antarctic Island views are all of native flora and fauna of the different islands, listed on the images as mollymawks, albatrosses, sea lions, crested penguins and erect-crested penguins On page 32 there is a view of the SS Knight Templar leaving Lyttelton on February 17, 1900, taking about 260 soldiers and 300 horses of the 3rd Contingent "the New Zealand Roughriders" to Durban, en route to fight in the South African War. Mollymawk rookery, Campbell Island

Description: Photograph taken on a cruise of the southern islands by the Government steamship Hinemoa, with the Governor, Lord Glasgow, Sir James Hector and others. On 14 February, according to a newspaper report of the voyage, the Hinemoa sailed close to the cliffs on the north cape of Campbell Island, so that photographs could be taken of the Mollymawk rookeries, which at that time were just completing the breeding season. Description: Views of the Chatham Islands, with emphasis on the house "Te Whariki" at Tuku, various aspects of wool baling, and wool transportation using a bullock team, and the landscape near Tuku. A number of images show buildings at Waitangi, Chatham Island, including the post office, the Mangoutu Hotel (also known as Odman's Hotel), the courthouse, and Heslop's Hotel. The house "Te Whariki" was built by E. Guest, but seems to be the home of Harry Blyth who appears in a number of the images. Harry Blyth is the collector of the images in the album, and possibly the photographer of some. It is also possible that some photographs were taken by Ernest Guest (photographer and postmaster), and some by Blyth's wife, Daisy Felicia Blyth (nee Cox), who was a photographer in her own right (see Turnbull Library Biographies Index) Title supplied by Library. Description: Comprises a photograph album containing images taken William Dougall and Frank Coxhead between 1861 and 1889 showing views of Otago and Fiordland, and a voyage to Campbell, Auckland and Antipodes Islands. Dougall's account of the voyage on the 'Stella' was published in The Southland Times between 15 to 21 February 1888 under the column heading "Far South". Negatives and photographic prints taken by William Dougall are also held at Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand. Two copies of the 'Far South' pamphlet which accompanied the photograph album are held in the National Library of New Zealand catalogue at PAM 919.31 DOU 1888 and Pam 1888 DOU 1545 (Alexander Turnbull Library copy). Photographer William Dougall travelled as official photographer on the New Zealand government steamer CGS 'Stella' to the Stewart, Snares, Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes and Bounty Islands in 1888. His account and photographs of the voyage were published as set of a bound photograph album and a pamphlet titled 'Far South: Stewart Island, The Snares, Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes and Bounty Islands: Notes' in 1888. Description: Photographs of a state visit to the Cook Islands, followed by a tour of various subantarctic islands, viewing the landscape and fauna, by Lord and Lady Glasgow, on the ship Hinemoa, in 1894. Photographs of Rarotonga include portraits of Ariki Makea Takau and her husband Ngamaru Rongotini; large group scenes at various welcoming celebrations; scenes of life in Rarotonga; and Ariki Makea Takau's residence. Photographs show landscape and wildlife views of Stewart Island and subantactic islands that lie south and west of Foveaux Strait. - Albatrosses on Campbell Islands - Auckland Island including Enderby Island hut and wreck of the "Grafton". - Penguin colony on Bounty Islands Dougall's account of the voyage on the 'Stella' was published in The Southland Times between 15 to 21 February 1888 under the column heading "Far South". Negatives and photographic prints taken by William Dougall are also held at Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand. Two copies of the pamphlet which accompanied the photograph album are held in the National Library of New Zealand catalogue at PAM 919.31 DOU 1888 and Pam 1888 DOU 1545 (Alexander Turnbull Library copy). Scottish born photographer William Dougall lived in New Zealand between circa 1875 and circa 1890. He ran his own photography studio in Invercargill from 1884. The steamer departed from Bluff on 19 January 1888 and returned to Port Chalmers on 9 February 1888. His account and photographs of the voyage were published as set of a bound photograph album and a pamphlet titled 'Far South: Stewart Island, The Snares, Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes and Bounty Islands: Notes' in 1888. Description: Transparency slides of Australia selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet shows views of Kings Park and Botanical Gardens and the War Memorial in Perth, a street scene and view from the waterfront; evening sky over Fremantle; an albatross; scenes in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens showing stringybark gum, a white wisteria, a Judas tree and an unidentified girl holding a koala bear; junior sports at Scotch College in Melbourne; and a view from the Dandenong Mountains to the Great Dividing Range. Views of Sydney including arrival off the Heads in the early morning, passing under Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney waterfront and a tugboat, and the bridge from various angles in Sydney. The slides are not filed in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of Australian images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England.
