Description: Shows two nests on the branch of a tree: the Auckland Hospital Board nest and the Whare Paia nest. A caricature of Titewhai Harawira depicted as a bird is shown in the Whare Paia nest, and an unknown man from the Auckland Hospital Board is represented in the nest on the left. A bird representing Ken Mason flies overhead, and has defecated into the faces of the inhabitants of both nests. A kiwi at lower right comments: "One in the eye for arrogance!" The report was critical of Whare Paia, scheme was a service for Maori mental health patients, wherein it was hoped to bring together Maori and pakeha treatments and methods. The report criticised the scheme for lack of direction, purpose and structure. The title\" One flew over the cuckoo's nest\" is a reference to the American motion picture of the same name (1975, from a 1962 novel by Ken Kesey) set in a mental institution. Talks about his family background - mentions his father Hector Mason's rugby career as part of the Maori All Blacks. Mentions not learning Te Reo as a child - recalls grandfather talking to aunts and uncles in Maori. Recalls attending Greymouth Technical High School and talks about growing up on the west coast of the South Island. Recalls meeting his wife Diane at school - mentions their marriage in 1960. Talks about studying law at Otago University before continuing his studies at Victoria University in Wellington. Recalls the establishment of the Victoria University Maori Club - mentions Miria Simpson, Reverend Kingi Ihaka, Whatarangi Winiata, Hoera Marumaru, Ringipo Bailey and Bill Kingi. Discusses his job at the Department of Maori Affairs an working with veterans of the 28th Maori Battalion - mentions Charles Bennett, Monty Wikiriwhi and Peta Awatere. Talks about moving to Palmerston North in 1959. Discusses his job as District Solicitor for the Department of Maori Affairs.
