Description: Shows the (supposed) costumes and customs of Pacific Islanders. Includes trees, a canoe, a fortified village, a floating ice island, a kangaroo and a European sailing vessel in the sea in the background. Most figures are derived from the illustrations to Cook's voyages, and the whole image appears to have been copied and rearranged by the French wallpaper-maker Joseph Dufour who produced his panoramic wallpaper 'Les sauvages de la Mer Pacific' (The natives of the Pacific Ocean) in about 1807 or 1808. The setting is nominally Tahiti, but the peoples depicted come from (from the left) Easter Island, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Australia, Tahiti, the Marquesas, and Tonga. A New Zealand pa is in the background atop a hill to the right and an ice-floe is in the distance beyond the ship. See 'An inside story - Dufour and Charvet's wallpaper of the South Seas' by Roger Collins in: Bulletin of New Zealand Art History, Vol 9, p. 5-13 Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s).
