Burchell, William John, 1782-1863

English explorer and naturalist. Travelled in Africa between 1810-1815 collecting over 50,000 specimens. He describes his journey in Travels in the interior of southern Africa (1822-1824). He travelled in Brazil between 1825-1830 again collecting a large number of specimens, including over 20,000 insects. A large part of Bruchell's collection was presented to the Oxford University Museum after his death. [Source: Online - Wikipedia, Aug 2006]

There is a black stripe overlaid with a wider white stripe extending from the eye to the back of the head. On the crown, above the white and black stripe, there is a patch of grey. On the lower edge of the wing there is similar black, white and grey colouration. The short tail appears to be grey with white underneath. The long legs are pale yellow.
