Description: Diana Valentine Best (formerly Cook nee Lewis) born England. Trained as a nurse before coming to New Zealand in 1966, when husband was appointed as a general practitioner (GP) at Owaka, South of Otago where they spent 13 years before going to Dunedin. Recalls nursing position at Mercy Hospital in 1980 before transferring to the new Dunedin Hospital as charge nurse in 1981 and joining tutorial staff. Studied for Advanced Diploma in Nursing at Christchurch Polytechnic (1984) and commenced degree at Otago University. Backgrounds her appointment as principle tutor and recalls the winding down of the hospital school programme and the preparation leading up to polytech training programme. Mentions: reaction of general public who saw enrolled nurses as better as they spent more time at the bedside; opposition from older nurses; response of medical profession; shortage of nurses at the time. Cites reservations about the clinical fragmentation and notes that current nurses are more technologists. Considers that `bedside nursing is not a lower form of medical care'. Since the closing of the hospital training school in 1990 describes involvement in the cervical assessment scheme with reference to Cervical Manager Area Health Board Project. Recalls that in 1996 the Cancer Society and Health Care Otago funded her attendance at the International Cytology Conference and in December 1996 she was appointed National Co-ordinator for the National Cervical Screening programme.
