The Personal Advocacy Trust was formed by parents in 1957 as a charitable trust. The Trust is concerned about who will be there for their intellectually disabled son or daughter when they are no longer living. In exchange for a fee The Personal Advocacy Trust provides a trained, supervised advocate for the rest of their son's or daughter's life after the parents have become unable to provide for their welfare. In Oct 1992 the Trust changed its name from The Trust for Intellectually Handicapped People Incorporated to The Personal Advocacy Trust Incorporated. The Trust was originally founded within the Intellectually Handicapped Childrens Society. Today the Trust is a seperate and independent organisation. See http://www.ihc.org.nz/adult/AdvocacyTrust.asp
