Description: Having received most of his schooling in Christchurch, Allott Gabites entered as a junior into two Christchurch architectural firms before the war, where he began the 'testimony of studies' system through the Auckland School of Architecture. He then served in the NZ Air Force, remaining in London after the war to study first architecture and then planning at London Schools. During this time he travelled in Europe looking at architectural design. He followed with a year's research in the United States before returning to a position in the Ministry of Works Planning Division. He went into private practice with Morris Patience in 1950, but did not focus solely on planning again until 10 years later. Although partners have changed over the years, the firm still operates today, 6 years after Mr Gabites' retirement. During his time as planner, he was most notably involved with the plans for Hamilton City, Taupo development, Tauranga / Mount Maunganui and Waikanae. He has been President of the New Zealand Planning Institute and Vice-President of the New Zealand Institute of Architects. He is currently actively involved with the new Museum of Aviation in Paraparaumu. Accompanying material - Copies of Presidential Addresses to the N.Z.
