Description: Comprises a letter and ticket: - An eight page outwards letter written by John Hardie to his grandmother Hannah "Kanga" Hardie (1867-1953), and his aunts Nonie and Mary, in which he recounts the experiences of himself, his sister Janet Dorey, and parents John Stewart Hardie and Eleanor Kathleen Hardie on Coronation Day 2 June 1953. Includes details about: he and Janet's seats in the New Zealand stand in The Mall, his parents sitting in the "grandstand" Stand 34 opposite Buckingham Palace, watching the procession, crowd reactions, New Zealanders singing "Māori Battalions" and cheering on hearing that Edmund Hilary and Sherpa Tensing had climbed Mount Everest, seeing Prime Minister Holland in the parade, and his impresssions of Queen Elizabeth. Also mentions a visit by Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis and Minister of Defence, to his school cadet inspection day. - A blue ticket for "Stand 34 Block B The Mall", with a map of the seating for the Coronation procession. The Hardie family lived in England between 1952 and 1956 while John Stewart Hardie was a senior officer in the London office of the Bank of Australasia. Description: Photographs, many possibly taken by Margaret Parry between 1966-1974 of hui, tangi, marae gatherings, cultural performances, waka regatta, award ceremonies, and other formal occasions relating to the Kingitanga movement. Dame Te Atairangikaahu is in many of the photographs, as are kaumatua and kuia - Maori elders, and prominent Maori leaders and figures of the era such as Dame Mira Szaszy, Whetu Tirakatene Sullivan and Matiu Rata. Some of the photographs are of Turangawaewae marae and environs. An original photograph of Princess Te Puea Herangi, at her 1937 Commander of the British Empire investiture ceremony at Turangawaewae, is included in the set; as is a photograph of three portraits of Johann Hacken Smith, Tauarau Para Para Kunekune and Karaitiana, brother of Tauara. Description: Vignettes concerning Canterbury and New Zealand politics. On the Christchurch mayoralty, four candidates (including Helyar Bishop, top left and Tommy Taylor, bowing) are pleading with a pretty woman. 'The roo of the future' shows a winged kangaroo and refers to the establishment of an Australian aviation corps. 'Sweet dreams' shows Sir Joseph Ward dreaming of himself in a paper crown walking alongside the newly-crowned George V. 'The police raided the pa of Rua ... and discovered a sly grog shop' shows European men sneaking into a pa entrance to buy alcohol. One man, detained by a policeman, claims to have turned religious, wanting 'to join this 'ere Rua bloke'. 'The Commissioner Question' shows an obese man, High Commissioner of the Pacific, on the ground, while two women, Auckland and Sydney, fight over him. A Fijian man gestures in the background. 'Two prisoners escaped from Darlington Gaol' shows a man pointing out a lunatic on the street to a policeman.
