Description: Shows an illustration of a central vertical pole to which various Wellington political candidates are clinging: John Duthie, Bell, T K Macdonald, George Fisher, Winter, McLean, E G Jellicoe, F H Fraser. A verse about each man appears down the sides of the poster, and at the bottom, the conclusion is: "In essaying the poll they have toiled hard, The fight was keen as could be / But now let them wash down all rancour, In a cup of our UNION TEA. Description: Shows a horse race, being won by the jockey Jellicoe, ahead of Duthie and Fisher on their mounts. A dejected bearded man in a top hat watches from the right. This is a galley proof rather that a newsclipping. It seems to indicate that Jellicoe won an election. However, "Fair play", 10 February 1894, pages 10-13 says that he unsuccessfully contested Wellington for a seat in Parliament in the interests of the Ballance Government. Well back in the field are runners labelled "Spirits" and "Water". The kilted runner is probably candidate Thomas Kennedy Macdonald, and the other runner may be either John Duthie or H D Bell.
