Description: Hand-coloured engraving of two birds captioned "1. The Wattled Starling. 2. The Black and White Indian Starling." by George Edwards, and engraved by J Pass, dated 1 November 1801. This would appear to be a plate from 'Encyclopedia Londinensis', compiled by John Wilkes, and edited by John Jones, issued in 24 volumes, 1796-1828. Depicts a Saddleback (Philesturnus rufusater [North Island] or Philesturnus carunculatus [South Island]) and an Asian pied myna (Gracupica contra). The depiction of 'The black and white Indian starling' by George Edwards, without the accompanying New Zealand Saddleback, and reversed, first appeared in Part IV of 'A Natural History of Birds', by George Edwards, published in 1751, as a plate facing page 187.
