Description: Photograph album documenting the centenary of the driving of the last spike on the North Island Main Trunk railway by Sir Joseph Ward on 6 November 1908. Images taken at Manganui-o-te-ao (also known as Manganuioteao), between National Park and Ohakune, on 15 November 2008 by John Linklater Scobie. No captions. Images include the unveiling of the memorial by former prime minister James Bolger, Chair of the New Zealand Railways Corporation, and Sue Morris, Mayor of Ruapehu District Council, on 15 November, 2008. There is also a photograph of a small plaque on the memorial, acknowledging the registration of this place as a registered historic place (by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust/Pouhere Taonga). - Also includes photographs of people in historic dress, the planting of a memorial tree, the release of pigeons from the Taumarunui Racing Pigeon Club, horses and carts, vintage cars, a steam roller from the Taumarunui Borough Council dated 1924, and a Kiwirail train. - Also includes two historic photographs of a crashed train which is labelled as being at Kakahi Bluff, and a photograph of a railway tunnel being constructed which is dated 1906. This includes three unidentified men and a horse and carriage. Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. The first three frames show a small group of men watching a race standing on the steps of a grandstand at Trentham Racecourse. Frames 4 onwards show a church service and re-enactment of the landing of Captain Cook at Ship's Cove [i.e. Ship Cove] in Marlborough Sounds, during the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in March 1970. The first and 6th frames show the Queen wearing a headscarf, greeting people. She is seen seated in the front row of a large audience.
