Description: A programme for the annual debutante ball of the Papanui Branch of the Labour Party. Page 13 has a message from the Prime Minister Walter Nash, and page 17 has a message from R M MacFarlane, MP for Christchurch Central. The list of debutantes is given on page 19. The ball programme is in the centre spread (pages 40-41), and there are pages of light articles and jokes, and many pages of advertisements by local businesses. The cover design is by John Harvey. Description: Lois Amy Aburn (nee Clark) born Eskvale Street [Dunedin] 1918. Recalls school fairs at St Clair school, Moreau Street and mentions teachers, Mr McMullan, Miss Young, Mr Simpson and Mrs Wilson. Other childhood recollections include: household chores; six weeks in hospital with scarlet fever; outings, games and picnics, including South Seas Exhibition at Logan Park (1925-1926) and Salvation Army Band at the Exchange every Sunday; travelling by tram; attendence at night school after leaving King Edward Technical College with reference to School Certificate known as Senior Free Place. Discusses training to be a Post Office worker and work with WAACs during World War II. Recalls marriage at Trinity Methodist Church, now Fortune Theatre. Mentions Waldron Crescent being built. Talks about move to Green Island and involvement with Plunket Club formed 1950. Recalls being on Plunket Executive and being the New Zealand co-ordinator for mother's clubs. Describes growth of Green Island Plunket in 1950s and 1960s. Refers to Debutante Balls at Green Island organised by Plunket. Refers to Doctor Neill Begg, Director medical services on Plunket Council and discusses his influence and role. Describes importance of voluntary work and refers to Citizens Advice Bureau in Green Island and Probis. Describes involvement with Turner's Service Station.
