McLean, Terry, 1913-2004, TP, 1913-2004

New Zealand sports journalist and author about rugby in New Zealand. He commenced as a journalist on the Auckland Sun in 1930, subsequently working on the Hastings Tribune, New Zealand Observer, Taranaki Daily News and Evening Post (Wellington). After World War II he joined the New Zealand Herald (Auckland) as sports editor in 1946. For the next 30 years he accompanied most All Black teams overseas and visiting sides in New Zealand, writing a series of 32 tour books and other books on rugby. He retired from the Herald in 1978, but continued writing weekly columns in various newspapers. MBE for services to sporting journalism 1978. Knight Companion NZOM for services to sporting journalism 1997. Inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame 2007.

Description: The papers include correspondence, drafts for books and articles, papers relating to his war service with the Security Intelligence Bureau and with 22 Battalion in Italy, his free lance work for the South African Argus news agency, newspaper cuttings and autobiographical notes. While rugby features heavily, there is material on other sports. These include information-rich notes on interviews with prominent athletes and their attitudes to the stresses of their sport. The correspondence, much of it written on tour with the All Blacks, describe life away from the immediacy of the rugby ground. Much of this collection dates from his retirement in 1978. His previous work for the New Zealand Herald newspaper may be found at the collection purchased in 2011 and held at MS-Group-1953.
