Description: Album compiled by Patrick Kelliher. Chiefly photographs relating to the construction of the power station at Tuai in the 1930s taken by Kelliher, a keen amateur photographer who worked in the powerhouse. Includes images of pack horses, heavy machinery and trucks, the construction of tunnels, spillway, a bridge, pipes, the power house and the huts in which workers lived. Also includes five images taken after the Kopuawhara flash flood of 19 February 1938 (in which 21 people were drowned) and a newspaper cutting from a year after the flood. Also a set of 14 images taken at Wairoa railway station at the the opening ceremony of the 97 mile Napier-Wairoa-Waikokopu portion of the Napier-Gisborne railway, also taken by Kelliher. Images include steam and diesel engines, visiting dignitaries and Maori performers. Also one photograph of Kelliher on a horse drawn cart in Masterton, Wairarapa, taken circa 1980s and a 1990 certificate to Kelliher from the Lions Club of Wainuiomata. Physical Description: 32 x 24 cm album with an embossed synthetic cover featuring a spear-bearing rider on a horse taking aim at a lion (or similar animal). Provenance: Donated by Christine Hayvice, New Zealand/Vancouver, Canada, 2013. Donor is the niece of Patrick Kelliher. The album was passed down to Ms Hayvice from her mother.

Notes that both his parents lived and worked at the Timaru Hospital until the birth of their first child, after which his father took on odd jobs, including the construction of the Timaru breakwater. Describes their move to Napier with the firm Palliser Jones, where his father was employed constructing the Napier breakwater. Talks about the home delivery of produce (bread, meat and milk), going to school at the age of three with his older brother, getting the cane in Standard 1 in preference to doing his homework, going to Sunday School and Bible Class and being in the church choir. Describes the family as Baptist. Talks about shipping going in to Napier, loss of life in the 1897 floods and transport, including the description of a landau. Describes local Maori and the Native Schools. Mentions moving to Palmerston North at the age of nineteen and working at the Sash and Door Factory. Description: Harold Francis Beamish discusses his childhood and school life prior to World War I, on the Whana Whana estate, where he was tutored at home and later attended Wanganui Collegiate and Huntly Boarding School. Describes in detail how he entered the Royal Naval Air Service in London 1915, his training at Crystal Palace, and Cranwell, and his service with 303 Squadron flying with Canadians over France. Discusses life as a World War I pilot in detail as well as flying techniques, dog fights and bombing by hand. Was awarded the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross). Also discusses the history of Whana Whana Station; his family; his love of horses and farming life in pre and post World War I, in Hawkes Bay. Other topics discussed include: station servants, shepherds and farmhands; blade shearing; clearing of land and sowing; the 1900 flood in Hawkes Bay; transport; stock droving; stock sales; rabbiting and employment of full time rabbiters; hunting weka and hares; dances and other entertainment; swagmen; dependence on horses; delivery of newspapers and a detailed account of the Napier earthquake as it affected the farm. Talks about the advent of the first cars as well as the reduction to subsistence farming during the Depression in the 1930s. Description: Photographic prints, mainly of the railway system between Napier and Gisborne, mainly taken 1948 by George Bridges. Most are of flood damage to the line in May 1948. There are others that have not been identified but are probably of the same line in 1948. Also two photographic prints of a derailment at, and subsequent damage to, Ngaruawahia Bridge, taken July 1974. Includes one photograph of a railways camp, probably for the Rimutaka deviaton; and another of the Brunner line showing the place on the line where Mr Bridges had hit the back of the express train (while on a jigger) leading to six months off work with concussion. Prints numbered of the Motuhara line are stamped on verso “Aerial Division of Wade Studios… Gisborne” Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Three bundles of photographic prints were delivered to the Library in an envelope with a handwritten annotation “George Bridges | Photo collection | Gisborne Floods | May 1948”. One bundle had a handwritten label “Unidentified | North of Napier | circa 1948”. The two other bundles were further enclosed in a Fotofast envelope with the handwritten annotation “Floods 48 | Gisborne | May 1948”. One bundle had a handwritten label “Napier-Wairoa-Gisborne | 1948 Flood damage”. The second bundle had a handwritten label “ Motuhora Branch Railway | 1948 Floods”. Another two images were posted to the library separately. These were annotated on the verso “Waikato River” and dated 1974. All prints, except the Brunner line image, were sorted and annotated on the reverse by Ray Ryan and other friends of Bridges. The Brunner print was caption by Bridges. Donor is the daughter of George Bridges. George Bridges was the assistant district engineer of Wellington District, NZ Railways in the late 1940s when he took these images. Quantity: 80 b&w original photographic print(s). 7 b&w original photographic print(s) b/w 3 image proof sheet strips containing 21 images in total. Physical Description: Gelatin silver photographic prints. Processing information: Prints were removed from envelopes and labels, and rehoused in photographic sleeves for conservation reasons. The envelopes and labels were not kept. Prints originally labelled “ Napier-Wairoa-Gisborne | 1948 Flood damage” are numbered PAColl-10622-01 to PAColl-10622-29. Prints originally labelled “ Motuhora Branch Railway | 1948 Floods” are numbered PAColl-10622-30 to PAColl-10622-45.
