Member of the House of Representatives for Auckland City West (1879-1881), then Waitemata (1881-1886). Treasurer of Auckland Provincial Council 1872-1873. Mayor of Auckland 1876-1877. Early Takapuna farmer, after whom Hurstmere Road was named. Farmed land on both sides of road from lake to sea. First Auckland seedsman. He died in Folkestone, Kent, England in 1886.
