Description: Contains three letters written by Baker to his father. The first, dated 6 Nov 1944, contains a 20 page account of three weeks leave spent in Britain. During this time he stayed with relatives in London with brief visits to other relatives in Southport and Farnborough. The second letter, dated Portsmouth 16 May 1945, describes the reaction in England to the end of the Second World War in Europe. The third letter, dated Sydney, 3 October 1945, contains a 67 page account of Baker's final days in Plymouth, England and his sea voyage from Southampton to Australia aboard the Orient liner `Otranto' enroute for New Zealand. The letter contains descriptions of various ports visited including descriptions of visits to Perth and Sydney, Australia. Also 12 post cards of London under fire and copy of Baker's record of service, 1943-1946. Baker, a New Zealander, was a radio operator in the Royal Navy during World War Two. Describes the production of springs for grenades, sten guns, anti-aircraft gunsights etc. Explains the equipment he designed to meet the demands, the output of the factory, hours of work, supply of raw materials, labour conditions and managerial structure. Describes his personal life prior to and during the war. Discusses his experiences in the territorials and with the civil defence (Home Guard) during the war. Describes the effects of the 1942 Earthquake in Wellington. Recalls V E Day celebrations, the winding down of the factory and transition from war to civilian life.
