Description: A life history interview with Mele Saiatua Lavulo, who was born in Mu'a on Tongatapu, Tonga in 1916, and arrived in Auckland with her family in 1952. Talks about 'palangi' ancestors, leaving Tonga on SS Tofua, and arrival in New Zealand. Discusses settling in Auckland, eventually buying a house in Ponsonby, husband Tevita Kautau Lavulo's employment on the waterfront, raising children, and their extended family. Recalls Queen Salote's close ties with NZ and with Tongans here. Talks about establishment of the United Church of Tonga in Auckland, and her involvement in other Tongan community associations such as the Tongan Society. Description: Joe Le'ota was born 31 December 1942 at Nuku'alofa, Tonga. Gives details of his Tongan background. Describes his father as Chief Spokesman for the King and his mother cooked for Queen Salote. Recalls the layout of the palace and playing with the Crown Prince. Talks about changes in his life when his mother died when he was eleven. Gives details of his education, teaching career and meeting his New Zealand wife when she visited Tonga. Describes shifting to New Zealand in 1972 and beginning dairy farming on the farm of Walter Reeves. Talks about becoming a sharemilker, training and being ordained as a priest of the Church of England and fitting in to the local community. Describes being on the farm at the time of the earthquake and the appearance of the large subsidence caused by the major faultline near the farm. Talks about his neighbour driving across and falling in to the faultline and being saved. Describes other broken roads, the Riverslea Shopping Centre, no power and water and people getting together in their need. Talks about one son being taken to Matata and another remaining at Awakeri School. Recalls that he was unable to milk the cows for two days. Describes the Army, Salvation Army, Civil Defence and Social Welfare being set up in the Edgecumbe Squash Court. Describes some abuse of assistance. Recalls calling on people, as a priest, and delivering food. Comments on people's need to talk. Explains that it took months to clean up the farm. Comments on insurance problems. Talks about post earthquake counselling and the efforts of Elsie Walker, a big community function at the rugby club and the overall effect of the earthquake of having united the community.
