Description: Margaret Alexander was born in Ashburton on 13 January 1936. Gives details of her family background, employment and marriage. Describes living in Carterton, making a trip south to a family funeral with two children and returning on the `Wahine'. Recalls being very sick overnight on the ferry and deciding to stay in the cabin. Describes a terrible crash when the `Wahine' hit Barrett's Reef. Recalls being bustled out of the cabin, having difficulties handling the children and being put in an upstairs cabin with them. Describes the help of Canterbury law student, Robert Crawford, during the day. Recalls the increasing list of the ship and then the `abandon ship' call. Describes being dropped into a lifeboat with her son and her daughter and Robert Crawford being in the same lifeboat. Describes conditions and their feelings. Recalls arriving at Seatoun, not seeing her daughter once she was ashore, being taken to Wellington Railway Station and Wellington Hospital and finding out they were all safe. Recalls talking again to Robert Crawford on the Holmes show (marking the 25th anniversary of the Wahine's sinking). Comments that she was not really upset by the disaster. Describes feeling lucky and her feelings about the reunion. Description: Shirley Hick was born in Napier on 3 August 1939. Gives brief details of her education. Talks about travelling to Christchurch with her three children to visit a fourth child at the Sumner School for the Deaf and returning on the `Wahine'. Recalls the bad weather warning and rough, but not frightening conditions overnight on the ferry. Describes the first indications that the crossing was not normal. Details the activity when the ship hit the rock and initial assurances. Describes how there were no life jackets for the children. Comments on the fellowship amongst the passengers. Recalls being told to abandon ship and having help in holding on to the children. Recalls her terror as a non- swimmer, losing her daughter and no longer hearing the baby screaming. Gives details of being in the sea, being rescued by a lifeboat which then capsized and rescued again by a fishing boat. Notes that she was pregnant. Describes landing at the wharf, being taken to the Railway Station and then the hospital without knowing about her children. Describes accepting that her missing daughter had drowned, one son was rescued and the baby had been revived and was severely disabled. Describes the twenty four years of caring for this son.
