Description: Three photographs from a page of the New Zealand Free Lance (25/1/1928) depicting the departure of the Ryan aeroplane `Aotearoa' from Sydney. Photographer(s?) unidentified. The caption underneath the photographs reads: `Aotearoa "hops off" on ill-fated trans-Tasman flight. "If we fail, the people of Australia and New Zealand will know that we did our best". These were the last words used by Lieutenant Moncrieff as he stepped into the monoplane at the Richmond Aerodrome, near Sydney, on the morning of January 10th. "We aren't going to fail, Scotty" said Captain Hood. and with a carefree laugh and handshakes they departed on the fateful journey. Above: After the take off.
