Mayor of Westport (1890-1897). Native of Glasgow. Came to New Zealand in the late 1860s to try his luck in gold mining. In 1872 started in Reefton as a builder and contractor. In 1873 married the only daughter of Donald Beaton, formerly of Launceston, Tasmania.
