Description: James Andrew (Jim) Thompson born Dunedin 1916. Describes family background, depression, father's death, jobs on leaving school with reference to boss, Jack Sanders, and enlisting for World War II. Recalls being attached to 23 Battalion, B Company, with reference to Col Reg Romans, training at Burnham Camp, send-off in Alexandria, sailing on `Andes' to Britain, time at Aldershot and journey to Egypt. Describes night manoeuvre in Egypt, time at Amariye before going to Greece and digging in at Mt Olympus. Discusses reaction to being attacked by Germans, withdrawal through Greece, evacuation from Porto Rafti on the `Glengyle' and arrival at Suda Bay [Crete]. Describes German invasion on 20 May [1941], screamers on Stuka planes, number killed, position near Maleme aerodrome, arrival of paratroopers, withdrawal from aerodrome area, march to Sphakia and evacuation on the `Phoebe' back to Alexandria. Recalls fighting through North Africa, finishing North African campaign at Takrouna and being picked for furlough draft. Describes welcome home to Alexandria (New Zealand), marriage, return to Burnham camp and strike against returning overseas. Mentions court martial for those who refused to go back overseas.
