Warner, Horatio Nelson, 1819-1906

Surveyor. Came to NSW from London 1836. May 1840 came to NZ in charge of James Campbell's survey staff to survey South Island land claimed by Johnny Jones. After arrival at the Bay of Islands, instead, the party laid out a township, New Bristol, opposite Herd's Point (Rawene), Hokianga Harbour, a private venture for Thomas Poynton. In Oct 1840, under the Acting Surveyor General, Felton Mathew, laid out town of Auckland. In 1844 transferred to Royal Engineers to lay out defences at the Albert Barracks.Joined the Provincial Lands Department as Chief Draughtsman 1854. Deputy Waste Lands Commissioner and Commissioner of Crown Lands 1855-1867. During Taranaki Waikato wars 1860-1863 was senior sergeant, Auckland Rifles Volunteers. Involved in survey of confiscated land. Government Agent in the Thames and Coromandel goldfields 1870-1875. Worked with his son Horatio Alfred Warner in private practice. Foundation member of the NZ Institute of Surveyors. Died in Auckland. [The Pioneer land surveyors of NZ / C A Lawn (qMS-1138, p 285-286)].
