Born Jane Norgate on 30 May 1839 at Little Plumstead, Norfolk, England. In 1856 emigrated to Victoria, where she worked as a domestic nurse and midwife, and in 1868 arrived in Hokitika. In 1876 she was appointed first matron of the hospital at Reefton. In 1879 she married the hospital pharmacist, David Ogilvie Preshaw.
