Auckland Provincial Government
Formed in 1853 until the abolition of provincial government in 1876.
Auckland Provincial Council and General Assembly Buildings - Built in 1854. Completed in time for the meeting of the first General Assembly in May. The Auckland Provincial Council held sessions in the building until the Provinces were abolished in 1875. The Auckland University College Council subsequently came into possession of the building and extended it along Eden Street, absorbing also, for the work of the College, the old District Courthouse near the water front. The site and buildings were acquired by the Auckland City Council in 1918, in connection with the formation of a main road from Customs Street to Symonds Street. (Information from 1/2-023115.
