Green, George Herbert (Dr), 1916-2001

Green, Herbert (Dr), 1916-2001

Gynaecologist at Auckland Women's Hospital. Descendant of artist Samuel Edwy Green. Was responsible for commencing in 1966 a research programme on carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the cervix, at National Women's Hospital. The research programme was never formally terminated and resulted in a number of women developing cervical cancer. A Committee of Inquiry into Allegations Concerning the Treatment of Cervical Cancer at National Women's Hospital and other related matters was set up by the Government in 1987 and headed by then District Court Judge, Silvia Cartwright. Following the findings of the Inquiry the Medical Council laid charges against several doctors involved. Charges of disgraceful conduct were never laid against Dr. Green as he was neither mentally or physically fit to defend them. The Medical Council made clear that if Dr. Green ever sufficiently recovered it would proceed with charges. Dr Green died during the 1990s
