Interview with Kathleen Spragg

Description: Kathleen (Kate) Hetty Spragg born Gisborne. Gives some family background - grandparents arrived in the `Ulcoats' in 1864. Father, Charles Robert Spragg, went to World War I in First Echelon having already been to the Boer War (South African War). Mother nursed during the flu epidemic among Maori women. Describes: schooling at Ngangapapa; fire at farm house and loss of Opohaki farm during Depression; move to Auckland where father was a dairy produce exporter; schooling at St Cuthbert's; contracting diphtheria, and training as a nurse at Auckland Hospital with reference to Miss Knutsey who was Matron. Talks about the outbreak of World War II and being called up and going on the `Oranje'as theatre sister. Describes how fast the ship went and how it shook and rolled and how patients were protected. Other topics covered include: treatment for tuberculosis patients, with reference to autoclave method; ranks system for VADs and sisters; nationalities on board and medical departments; treatment of suppurating wounds with vaseline gauze; VE Day; repatriation from Singapore; return home on `Wahine'. Recalls seeing Aunt Daisy on a tramcar in Wellington. Mentions hospitality hut in Hyde Park run by Anne Grant. Discusses career after the war as a tutor at Greenlane Hospital and taking a year off to act as industrial nurse at TEAL at Mechanics Bay.
