[Taylor, Richard], 1805-1873 :He Tarau. [1855-1870].

Date: 1855 - 1870

From: Taylor, Richard 1805-1873 :Sketchbook. [Loose sketches from E-296-q]. 1835-1860.

Reference: E-296-q-192

Description: Shows a sketch of a gurnard fish with rows of scales. Handwritten notes around the image state that the he tarau is something like a kahawai and has no dorsal fin - it is found in holes and caves of the rock and does not swim about nor will it take the hook. It abounds at Taranaki and is captured by the natives going into the water up to their middles and placing a basket or ... net to the mouth of a hole and poking it until it enters. Its scales resemble those of a lizard. Quantity: 1 drawing(s) in sketchbook.. Physical Description: Ink drawing, 115 x 180 mm.
