A metal clasp and lock at one time operated to secure the case closed. The case opens out flat, but was probably at one time secured at the sides so that it opened only enough to allow papers to be slipped inside. The inside is lined with green, white and black checked paper. Inscription gives the name of a former owner as Sir David Brewester, but this is probably the Scottish physicist Sir David Brewster who wrote a pamphlet addressed to Sir Walter Scott, entitled "Letters on natural magic". By: Kinsey, Joseph James (Sir), 1852-1936

Description: A matching pair of ornaments, not identical. Both show a Chinese longevity god riding a large crane with open beak, mounted on a flat pedestal base with four claw feet. Both have a chrysanthemum mark on the bases. The work is likely to be Japanese, using Chinese models. The size of the cranes suggests Japanese work as well as the quality of the work and the nature of the inlays. The figure may be Jofuku, the Chinese wizard and physician, in lengend sent by the Chinese T'sin Emperor She Wang Ti (Cheng) to seek the elixir of life on Mount Horai. Both Jofuku and cranes are associated with longevity. According to Elizabeth Wilkin Antiques Ltd, these sculptures are likely to have been made between 1860 and 1915. Quantity: 2 curio(s).
