Wellington Grammar School

Forerunner of Wellington College (Information from "The Light Accepted; 125 years of Wellington College" by A W Beasley, page 11.). Opened in 1867 in Woodward Street. In 1869 the school moved to a fine new, spired, wooden building on the hills above central city in Clifton Terrace (Architect Christian Toxward). Notable for its large gothic spire. Later this building was occupied by the Terrace School - the building burnt down in 1901. In 1874 the college opened in a much larger building at its present location.
