Description: Alan Dudley Tomkins born Green Island 1927, fourth generation of a family of tanners. Recalls memories of Green Island school and refers to Mr Howard (headmaster) and Mr Christianson (first assistant). Lists shops in Main Street. Refers to McDonald and Miller's bacon factory. Talks about father's efforts to obtain sewerage system for Green Island in the early 1930s. Describes training as a tanner. Gives history of Bayley Tomkin's Tannery business which became Bayley Tomkins Hedges Limited, until it was taken over by Southland Frozen Meat Company, forming a subsidiary company called Knight Taylors Limited and this included B T H Knight & Sons sheepskin tannery. Disccusses growth of business after World War II and decline of tannery and its reversion back to a fellmongery which meant loss of employment in the area. Refers to Government relaxation of import controls to manufacture of leather in New Zealand. Talks of employment of women in the early 1950s and rates of pay for men and women.
