Stinson, Charles Alexander (Sir), 1919-1989

Photographer on Fiji, ca 1960s, and associated with Stinson's Ltd, postcard distributors of Suva, Fiji. Son of W. J. Bolton Stinson, the founder of the original Stinsons Studios in 1912. Also a politician. Minister of Finance in 1972 and driving force of the Fiji Tourist Bureau.

Description: Photographs relating to Fiji Forces Association. Comprises photographs donated by various members of their wartime experiences, and photographs of Association events. Photographs include formal and casual group photographs of New Zealand and Fijian military units, and many of the photographs are annotated with the names of the individuals as well as details relating to events associated with the images. These include a set of photographs relating to military operations in Bougainville, one of which is inscribed "Alex Marsh and I are returned from Mawaraka Point. [...] wireless & gear, aerial and chains on jeep. On this job poshumous V. C. was awarded to Fijian [Sefanaia Sukanaivalu]." Description: Photographic prints of Rarotonga, Fiji, and probably Papeete,Tahiti, comprising: -12 'miniature views' of Rarotonga taken between 1945 and 1952 by an unidentified photographer. -two small panoramic views of Fiji: one of the botanical gardens in Suva and one of a mountain town in Viti Levu. Both were taken circa 1960s by Stinson Studio, probably by Charles Stinson. -A photograph showing what appears to be the aftermath of a tornado, with corrugated iron and rubble scattered over a large area. Taken by L Gauthier, circa 1907-1919, probably in Papeete, Tahiti.
