Jackson, Mason, 1819-1903

London wood engraver, who engraved plates for the Illustrated London news around 1860s. In 1860 he was appointed art editor of the Illustrated London news, a post he held for thirty years. He wrote a history of the rise and progress of illustrated journalism. [Source: wikipedia 2009]

Description: Shows an aboriginal man looking skywards to the bee he is chasing (and not aware that he is about to trip over a low-growing shrub). Behind him are two other bee hunters. He is carrying a stick and cloth bag, and wearing a grass skirt. On the left is a grass tree. Description: Shows an aboriginal man calling `Coo-oo-oo-ee' to attract the attention of fellow aborigines in the distance. He is standing on a rocky spur overlooking a stream and rocky land below. The men below are crossing the stream and walking up a hill in single file carrying spears. Beside the man on the spur is another man who is lying down with his spears on the ground behind him, watching the scene below.
