Description: Photographs of Samoa taken during the 1920s by unidentified photographers. Images include scenes of Samoan ceremonies, including the presentation of Fine Mats at Mulinu'u; an investiture; Anzac Day, placing wreaths on the graves of soldiers who died in samoa; scenes of the Faipule (this image with the inscription "Faipule. Samoan Parliament"); ceremonial welcoming canoes; Sir Charles Fergusson, and General George Spafford Richardson; and scenes at various schools, including group portraits of pupils and staff, and sporting teams. Another sequence shows the damage which occurred during a hurricane in 1925, including the grounding of the ship Lady Roberts, and destruction of plantations and buildings. Two photographs have an additional historical note: On page 72: "Visit to native village. `Historical photo. This indicates the rising of the organisation of the "Mau". General Richardson visits the biggest villages. Note the poor attendance and the disturbed countenance of the Chief'. General Richardson and party listening to the orator's speech" and, on page 77 "Visit of General Richardson to the village of Lufi Lufi (Note the poor attendance. Description: Collection features a letter from Rear Admiral Richard G Davenport to Lieutenant Commander Henry Ware Lyon regarding the performance of Commander Dennis Walbach Mullan and his crew during the Samoan Crisis of 1889. Includes printed eight-page booklet with the title, printed on cover and repeated on title page: 'The Shipwreck at Samoa, March 15th and 16th, 1889, by J Blumenbach, Ship's Writer, U.S. Flagship Trenton'. The imprint page features the following printed dedication: "To Lieutenant Commander Henry Ware Lyon, U.S.N., who, on the lower decks of the Trenton, where the battle with the elements raged fiercest and hardest, inspirited the men with his own courageous bearing and loyal determination to persevere in their efforts to save the ship, this tale is respectfully dedicated. Apia, Samoa, June 12, 1889." This is followed by the poem "The Shipwreck at Samoa", consisting of 35 four-line stanzas, relating the events of 1889 at Samoa including the stand-off between the German and United States naval vessels and the cyclone event of 15th and 16th of March, and closing with an expression of gratitude to the "King of Samoa" Paramount Chief Mata'afa and his subjects. Description: Folder of 48 postcards from Samoa with images photographed by Alfred Tattersall and Thomas Andrew. The postcards were all reproduced in the publication compiled by Alice Hunt 'Greetings from Samoa: Early Twentieth Century Postcards and a tribute to Alfred Tattersall' (Palmerston North: Manuia Books, 2016). The photographic postcards document Samoa, including historic events such as the cyclone of 1889, the volcanic eruption of 1905, and some are dated 1910. During this period Samoa was under German administration and consequently many of the postcards feature captions in the German language. Other subject matter depicted includes: - Volcanic activity, including lava running into the sea - Shipping, including naval vessels and fishing canoes - Shipwrecks of American and German naval vessels following cyclone of 1889 - Landscapes and scenery, including waterfalls - The build environment, including traditional and colonial buildings - Individual and group portraits of people, ranging from copra workers and to the king of Samoa, Malietoa Laupepa. - Natural history and indigenous costumes and adornments Some of the postcards bear the imprint of the "Deutsche Samoa-Gesellschaft, Berlin-Apia" Also two postcards not directly related to Samoa, one portraying two female subjects related to Women's Auxiliary Army Corps, and one depicting "The Mosque of Omar, at Jerusalem". These two postcards with inscribed messages from circa 1918, at the time of the Influenza Epidemic, by Olive Blanche King to her sisters Florence King and Amelia Cora King, describing the experience of severe illness suffered by the writer and her family, including mother Susana Key and brothers Edward and George.
