Jeans, Emma, 1822?-1892

Jeune, (Mrs), active 1900s

Early landowner, farmer, and shop keeper in Masterton, Wairarapa. Born in Barnstaple, Devon, England, circa 1822 to John and Mary Jeans. Emigrated to New Zealand with her sister Sarah Hacker (later widow of John Hacker who drowned in Wellington Harbour in 1855). Resided in Masterton by 1857. She farmed land at Mangaakuta and with her sister owned land in Church Street. She also ran a general store from the buidling in which she lived. Both sisters lived in a Church Street house known as Keaton House (later known as Jeans-Hacker House).

The Church Street property in Masterton was subdivided in early 20th century, and the new streets were named Elizabeth, Hacker, Jeans, and Keaton.
