Description: Letters from Charles Edwin Allom, son of Thomas Allom, brother of Albert James Allom and a 2nd Lieutenant with the Bombay Artillery, to his mother and father. Describes the voyage to India in 1846, life in India with the Bombay Artillery, the Punjab campaign of the second Anglo-Sikh War 1848-1849, and the seige of Multan ("Mooltan"). Includes sketch plan showing the military dispositions during the seige. The last letter is written a month before his death. Mentions Wakefield and Torlesse in several of the letters. Includes original envelope, made out of the Times Literary Supplement for 1905, in which the letters were held. Source of title - Supplied Quantity: 2 folder(s). 0.02 Linear Metres. Recalls being trained by Zoe (?) Bartley-Baxter and joining Grafton Theatre, Auckland Little Theatre. Talks about RUR (Rossom's Universal Robots) written by Karl Capek before going overseas at the age of 21 years, meeting future husband, Bert Lawley (an engineer with Indian Government), en route, spending ten years in India where 1st child was born in 1939. Describes life and conditions in India; bombing of Calcutta by Japanese; return to New Zealand with daughter for schooling, drama of getting on board ship and being in Melbourne for VE day.
