"We want to be more eco-friendly... So we're charging for plastic bags... You may well ...

Date: 2009

From: Hubbard, James, 1949-: Digital caricatures and cartoons

Reference: DCDL-0011018

Description: In four frames two self-satisfied businessmen who represent the big shopping chains 'Foodstuff' and 'The Warehouse' tell the world that they are trying to be eco-friendly and so are charging for plastic bags. They add that people might wonder why they don't convert to paper (bags) and they happily say that in fact they do as they count up the (paper) dollar notes. The Warehouse has become the latest retailer to add a 10c surcharge on its plastic bags in a bid to encourage the use of re-usable bags. ...Foodstuffs is the first New Zealand supermarket group to introduce a nationwide 5c per bag charge which they say they are committing most of to environmental causes, although it will not be drawn on how much extra revenue the new charge will create. Tremain, Garrick, 1941- :"Did ya see the Live 8 Concert?" Otago Daily Times. 12 July 2005.

Date: 2005

From: Tremain, Garrick, 1941- :[Digital cartoons published in the Otago Daily Times]

Reference: DX-022-297

Description: There are four frames in which two small boys are chatting about the Live 8 concert and world poverty. They have been made aware of the fact, because of the concert, that there is poverty in the world unlike anything they have seen. They realise that Warehouse bargains are bargains because of the cheap labour that allows the production of cheap goods. The implication is a realisation of the dilemma faced by the comparatively wealthy that eliminating poverty could mean a reduction in the standard of living for themselves. Other Titles - "Yeah! Cool!!" "Y'know some people in the world are so poor they can't even afford Warehouse bargains!" "I know...It's them that make the Warehouse bargains." "Yeah...That's why they're bargains!" Live 8 was a series of concerts that took place in July 2005, in the G8 nations and South Africa. They were timed to precede the G8 Conference and Summit held at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland from July 6-8, 2005; they also coincided with the 20th anniversary of Live Aid. Running parallel with the UK's Make Poverty History campaign, the shows planned to pressure world leaders to drop the debt of the world's poorest nations, increase and improve aid, and negotiate fairer trade rules in the interest of poorer countries. "It's MINE! I saw it first!" "No, I saw it first!!" "It's not Christmas shopping lunacy...

Date: 2007

From: Moreu, Michael, 1969-: [Digital cartoons published in the Christchurch Press and Fairfax Media]

Reference: DCDL-0004502

Description: Shows two men whose ties bear the names 'Foodstuffs' and 'Woolworths' fighting over a large box labelled 'The red Shed'. A woman nearby tells her child that they are not fighting over a Christmas shopping item but over 'The Warehouse'. Refers to a High Court decision that Foodstuffs and Progressive Enterprises can buy The Warehouse. This followed on from the Commerce Commission's refusal to grant the two supermarket chains clearance to acquire up to 100 percent of the red sheds. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
