Description: Army correspondence book records notes to Officer Commander (O/C), B Company, 5 Oct 1914. Notes on a military exercise in Karori, Wellington in early Oct 1914 including sketch maps. Letters start 7 Feb 1915 from Kubri, Egypt to his military commanders. Also weekly military reports and letters home to family and friends in New Zealand from Zeitoun Camp. Note on 8 Apr 1915 acknowledging a censor's stamp for the Wellington Battalion of the New Zealand Infantry Brigade, NZ and A Division. Last letter of volume on page 97 to Lady Godley regarding the care of the sick soldier "Gordon", written in Zeitoun Camp, 13 Mar 1915. Description: Letter book begins 17 May 1915 with a letter from Malone to Major Sandford of Taranaki about fighting conditions for his soldiers and the difficulties of obtaining supplies from the Ordnance Stores. In a letter to Bruce H Morison on 19 May 1915 he relates the advancement as a soldier of Morison's son in Gallipoli. He makes the observation that British Regulars regard Malone's Battalion as the "The White Gurkhas" which is seen by everyone as a great compliment. Further letters to family members, military colleagues and friends in New Zealand. Two letters to Miss Thomas are in French. Also includes organisational details for Courtney's Post with sketches. Description: Photographs relating to William George Malone, the Malone family, and his homes in Stratford, Taranaki. Photographs taken between 1879 and 1923, ca 1948 and circa 1979 to 1992 by a range of photographers. Includes studio portraits and informal family scenes, some on pages extracted from photograph album. Nearly all photographs are identified and dated. There are explanatory notes from the donor accompanying some prints. One group of eight black and white prints relate to Malone, his first wife Elinor Lucy (nee Penn), their children Norah, Edmond Leo, Terence (Terry) Joseph, Brian Bernard, Maurice Patrick, and the original home on Cardiff Road, Stratford, Taranaki. Taken between 1879 and circa 1905. Includes the earliest surviving studio portrait of William Malone taken in England, studio portraits of Elinor Lucy and three children, plus photographs of Malone, and family taken outside the house. Points of interest include Elinor Lucy with pet dog on bench seat, four children posing beside the garden gate of the Opunake Road property ca 1902, and two sons wearing lemon squeezer hats in the garden. One group of black and white prints relate to Ida Katherine ('Mater') (nee Withers), second wife, and and includes their children Denis George, William Bernard (Barney), Elinor Lucy (Mollie), and the first Malone family homestead called 'The Farlands' on Avenue Road, New Plymouth. Includes scenes of Malone and bush clearing on the 1300 acre farm at Puniwhakau (part owned with business partner H.B. Worthington), snowy Mount Egmont (Mount Taranaki), Malone with partners and staff of Malone, McVeagh and Anderson law firm, Ida Katherine, with Mrs Burke, Eliza Hammerton in a horse trap pulled by horses 'Trot' and 'Peggy', with Terence Malone on a bicycle beside them, plus interior and exterior scenes of all children around house. One group of black and white prints show the family outside the second Malone home called 'The Farlands' on Opunake Road, Stratford, (built in 1911), includes family scene with Betty Moyle and Mr and Mrs Penn, third son Brian in army uniform. Also includes copy of studio portrait of Malone, Ida Katherine, Mollie, Denis and Barney taken in 1914, plus print of Malone and Ida Katherine with family and friends on the porch of the Mountain House, New Plymouth, taken in 1914. One group of prints relate to the work of Malone descendants who have collected material relating to William George Malone. Includes black and white portraits of Denis G.W. Malone, Edmond (Ted) Penn Malone, Grandson, and colour landscape images of 'The Farlands' Opunake Road property showing English Elm trees thought to be planted by Malone, hilly terrain, red corrugated iron stables, and the modern farm house on site of original homestead.
