Calvary Hospital (Wellington, N.Z.)

Private hospital run by the Little Sisters of the Company of Mary (LCM). Formerly known as Lewisham Hospital. Renamed Calvary Hospital in 1953. Also had a psychiatric clinic attached. Mary Potter Hospice operated at Calvary until 1990. Sold in the 1980s and became Wakefield Hospital.

Description: Raye Elizabeth Boyle, later Sister Bernard, born Taumaranui 1940, after six months moved with parents to Wellsford, North Auckland. Discusses schooling at Wellsford State School and Sacred Heart Convent Wanganui as a boarder; on leaving school, training as a Karitane nurse at Stewart (Stuart?) Home in Wanganui and move to work at Calvary Hospital, Christchurch, 1960. Entered the Little Company of Mary in 1961 and recalls assisting with the babies in the Maternity wing at Calvary Hospital. Discusses postulancy, Novitiate, first vows, types of prayer in religious life, and learning acceptance and tolerance for other members of community. Mentions commencement of Nursing Training school in 1963. Talks about experience in theatres while training and training experience at Wellington hospital with children and casualty and infectious diseases. Describes Recovery unit and recovery nursing. Recalls, with the assistance of Sister Francis, Sister Kathleen, Wellington Hospital and Home of Compassion, setting up the first Theatre Sisters Group now known as Operating Room Nurses Association under the umbrella of the Registered Nurses Association. Reflects on the sale of Calvary Hospital, Christchurch, Wellington and Hawera and explains how the grief and loss was harder each time. Backgrounds move to smaller community, renting a house in Daniell Street [Newtown] and later buying a house in Rintoul Street. Discusses involvement with Sisters, Priests and Brothers for Justice in Newtown; district nursing in Newtown; voluntary district nursing in the Newtown Park flats under the umbrella of Wellington Hospital district nursing; involvement through City Council in setting up `Pennytouch' equivalent to Neighbourhood Watch, getting pensioners to keep an eye out for each other; experience as Rental Arrears Officer for City Council; involvement on Advisory Committee in the Homecare programme set up by Wesleycare, becoming Community Care manager in 1993. Describes the development of the programme for the elderly - making sure their voices are heard etc and also addressing loneliness. Mentions involvement with Age Concern and Women's Night shelter for women who are homeless. Backgrounds the establishment of Catholic Health Care Facilities of Aotearoa New Zealand in 2001. Mentions Vatican II and the changes over the years since. Description: Honora Kearns (Nora) born Papanui, Christchurch 1933. Outlines family background. Recalls traumatic time for family when father died in 1946. Describes schooling at St Joseph's Catholic Primary school, Papanui, secondary at Sacred Heart College, Christchurch and working for a year at Lewisham [Calvary Hospital, Christchurch] before entering the sisters of the Little Company of Mary in 1951. Mentions lack of Novitiate in New Zealand, having to travel to Australia which took four days. Refers to the Wanganella. Describes uniform [habit] for postulants, comradeship of Novitiate, religious formation and study and training as nurse after taking first vows. Refers to Mary Potter who founded the Little Company of Mary and her philosophy of going out and ministering to people. Recalls returning to New Zealand in 1958 for final vows, becomming a professed nun. Discusses ten years spent at Calvary Hospital Christchurch and the changes in nursing, including change from hospital-based training to Polytechnic and new techniques. Also recalls liturgical changes for LCM sisters as a result of Second Vatican Council, resulting in many sisters leaving Religious life which meant having to employ more lay nurses. Backgrounds the formation of clinic in Tonga run by the sisters and forming a Foundation there and recalls going to Tonga with Sister Lusia in 1974 to begin an Out patients clinic in village of Pea four miles out of Nukualofa. Talks about ear problems amongst Tongan children and efforts to encourage mothers to bring babies to clinic at first sign of infection. Gives reasons for ear problems. Recalls return to Wellington and discusses changes for LCM in the 1980s, sale of Calvary Hospital Christchurch to Southern Cross, retaining Mary Potter Hospice there, sale of Calvary in Wellington in 1986 and sisters move out of large institutional type buildings to small community groups which were very different but enjoyable. Describes move to Hawera to work with Catholic Social Services and refers to problems of struggling families and solo mothers. Description: May Catherine O'Reilly (later Sister Mary Carmela) born Townsville, Queensland 1920. Recalls education in Australia and ten years working as a stenographer for an Insurance Company before joining the nursing order of the Little Company of Mary, becoming a postulant in October 1947. Describes training in the Novitiate and commencement of study for nursing training in Lewisham, Sydney after First Profession in 1950. Describes Final Profession in 1953 and the transition of moving into convent with 90 professed sisters, of various ages. Recalls being sent to New Zealand as Provincial Bursar in 1957. Describes the simplicity of record keeping in those days and compares with present day system. Recalls being made Provincial in 1969, being responsible for all the communities in New Zealand, requiring a formal visit once a year. Recalls changes to habit (uniform) towards the end of 1963 and attitude of members to this change. Talks about trip to Rome in 1973 and being elected to Council. Describes duties of Councillor which included trip to Korea and Zimbabwe in 1975. Notes that Sisters still have a hospital and an Aids clinic in Zimbabwe and one mission in Morimbinda. Recalls return to New Zealand in 1985 and outlines sale of Order's hospitals; Christchurch hospital [Calvary] sold ca 1979, Calvary, Wellington sold ca 1987 to Wellcare who didn't make a go of it, then taken over by Wakefield, with capital being invested for LCM. Recalls LCM renting back ground floor of Calvary for two years until the Hospice was built in Mein St, [Newtown] 1990. Discusses the strengths of the Little Company of Mary and the inevitability of the changes. Description: Sister Helen Anne Barry born Christchurch 1939. Recalls primary education at Addington convent, St Theresa's convent in Riccarton, secondary at Sacred Heart College, Ferry Road, Christchurch and working in office for three years as a stenographer before entering the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary in Lewisham, Sydney, Australia in 1959. Outlines religious training, firstly as a postulant, then Novitiate and final profession as a nun in 1967, taking the religious name of Sister Mary Joseph. Explains why training had to be done in Australia and discusses the various hospitals run by the sisters. Talks about return to New Zealand, maternity training, midwifery training, psychiatric training at Sunnyside Hospital and return to work in Calvary clinic Christchurch, being in charge of Psychiatric clinic. Discusses changes in phychiatric nursing and refers to availability of tranquilizers in the 1950s. Recalls move to Wellington 1984 and refers to the establishment of Mary Potter Hospice and the treatment of cancer patients. Refers to the down-sizeing of the order and the decision to live in smaller communities. Talks about the sale of the Wellington Hospital [Calvary] and the Trust Board. Mentions Victor Dick and Mr Pyatt. Describes Churchill Fellowship and going to the Richmond Fellowship College in London undertaking course in Human Development.
