Description: This collection includes two albums of photographs compiled by Charles Morris Woodford, taken during a voyage to and residence in the Solomon Islands from April to October 1886, and additional undated loose photographs. The collection includes images from the villages Aola and Fauro in the Solomon Islands. Images include village life, canoes, native animals, customs and the natural environment as well as Woodford’s life and Government residence in Tulagi, Solomon Islands. Additional photographs from Rabaul, Madang, New Britain and New Ireland in New Guinea. Charles Morris Woodford was born in 1852 and educated at Tonbridge School in England. He settled in Suva about 1882 and from Fiji visited Kiribati (the Gilbert Islands group), as Government agent on the ketch Patience. In 1886, as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society he made the first of three successive explorations of the Solomon Islands, especially Guadalcanal, where he was the first white man to penetrate the interior to any distance, collecting natural history specimens for the British Museum. His experiences are described in his book, 'A Naturalist Among Headhunters' (1890). Quantity: 240 electronic scan(s) of original black and white photographic print(s). Description: Compiled by S Percy Smith. Album includes 42 pages of photographs of Samoan scenery, towns, buildings, and portraits. Photographers represented include Burton Brothers, Thomas Andrew, J Davis, and A & W. As well as Samoa, this album includes photographs of men and one woman in the Solomon Islands; their ceremonial dress, weapons, and a house with an ornately woven patterned wall, and thatched roof. The last two photographs show men with weapons, wearing masks. Several photographs show images relating to Robert Louis Stevenson. One (on page 32) shows "R L Stevenson & party". Stevenson and his wife with European and Samoan men and women are seen standing at the back of a large group on the steps of the verandah at Vailima. The verandah is draped with fern leaves. The group seated in front on the stairs includes Samoan men, mostly holding axes, and a group of sailors holding musical instruments. He settled in Suva about 1882 and from Fiji visited Kiribati (the Gilbert Islands group), as Government agent on the ketch Patience. In 1886, as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society he made the first of three successive explorations of the Solomon Islands, especially Guadalcanal, where he was the first white man to penetrate the interior to any distance, collecting natural history specimens for the British Museum. Description: Shows head and shoulders portraits of four young men of Tikopia in the Solomon Islands. All except the figure at lower left are tattooed and bearded. The figure at lower left wears a necklace, and the man at upper right wears a disc-shaped pendant on a cord around his neck. The two right hand figures each wear a gold earring. Other variations of this image show the figures in reverse. Other Titles - Inhabitants of the island of Tikopia Sainson made the original drawings for these subjects in 1827 or 1828. An example of this image by Fuchs and Honegger, but in reverse, was published in 1845, in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz' "Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen des Menschen der verschieden en Rassen und Stamme nach den neuesten Entdeckungen und vorzuglichsten Originalien" (3rd edition, 1845).
