Ajax GKN, Lower Hutt :[Three packets for screws. 1950-60s?]

Description: Boxes of three sizes, all for containing screws. GKN stands for Guest Keen & Nettlefold, a branch of an Australian firm, opened in Seaview ca 1942, and closed 1997. Smallest box contained one gross (144) 3/4 woodscrews, with c'sunk slotted heads. Middle size contained 200 woodscrews. The largest box has lost the label giving its contents. The design in blue is the same on all boxes, except for size. The donor's grandfather, Mr Leslie Donaldson, opened the Seaview branch of Ajax GKN, in about 1942, and was the Managing director, ca 1947-67. Andy recalls being a representative for Lynne Ropes selling cordage, which involved attending marine farming conferences and getting to know mussel farmers. Mentions seeding with Spanish lace and a request from Clem Mellish to come up with alternative. Describes developing mussel socking by experimenting with daughter's toy knitting machine, and the commencement of manufacturing and marketing mussock to industry in 1978. Refers to setting up company, Mussel Products Ltd., and obtaining patent. Outlines the development of machinery used for mussock and the change in boat design. Holyoake assures Skinner that the dog is not really savage. The dog's leash is held by a smiling Manufacturer. A mother and father in the right background have scaled a wall and a lamppost to get away from the dog, leaving their child crying.
