Description: Galina and Wassili Wassiliewa lived at 16 St John Street on the northern side of the Aro Valley and connecting with the very end of the Terrace. Over many years photographs were taken of the living and dining rooms. These often included guests, though more often they are just interior shots or photographs of Galina and her dogs. Galina seems to have kept dogs most of the time she lived in New Zealand, her last being a huge white Pyrenean mountain dog called Tata, and an English labrador called Fedia. She also kept cats. Description: View of the living room of house designed and built in 1909 by arts and crafts architect, Walter Chapman-Taylor for James and Vera Bell. The wooden floor is covered with large eastern rugs, on one of which stands a chair and gate-legged table. The internal walls are lined with bookshelves near which stand armchairs. The lower walls are covered with hessian, and the upper walls and ceiling with rough-cast plaster. Many-paned casement windows light the room, and a part of the dining room can be seen through the far door. There is no electric lighting. Photographed by Sarony Studios, Wellington, in 1909. The interior doors of this house are braced by planks which have adzed-shaped sections cut into them. This was a trade mark of Walter Chapmen-Taylor. This photograph originally belonged to Andrew Bell, the son of Katherine Mansfield's sister Vera Bell (nee Beauchamp). This house burnt down in 1911 (info - Judy Siers). He is identified as an oil tanker driver by the writing on his T shirt. The image on the television is of a boxer raising his arms in victory. The cartoon refers to the oil tanker drivers who went on strike in a bid to work a 35 hour week and additional holiday provisions, and the boxing match in New Orleans between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran, in which Duran quit the fight. The wooden floor is covered with eastern rugs. The lower part of the internal walls are covered with hessian, topped by a shelf on which a picture and some pottery are displayed. The fire place is of brick and the opening in the form of a gothic arch. The upper walls and the ceiling are covered with rough-cast plaster finish. The gallery leads to a braced plank bedroom door, to the left of which is a built in plank cupboard. There is no electric lighting. Photographed by Sarony Studios, Wellington, in 1909.
