Rockliff, A S, 1910?-1963

Born at Kaitangata, and educated at the King Edward Technical College, Dunedin. Noted railway historian, writing for many railway publications; Founding Member of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society, and Vice-President of the Dunedin Branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Union from its inception in 1956. Also very interested and involved in printing. See ATL Biographies Index (1963, vol 3, p 195). There is an A S Rockliff named on a number of photographs in albums of railway interest compiled by Albert Percy Godber.

Photographs taken by Godber include washout on Hutt Road, Paekakariki, 1942; main street, Kaikoura, 1945; Lake Rotoma; digging out a cutting on the Haywards Road; Sunday School children at Waitahuna, Lake Taupo; large potatoes dug in the garden; Foxton, 1933; Confidence Carnival, Wellington, 1933; 'an old whare, Parihaka'; 'Tewhaiatemotu' meeting house at Mataatua marae undergoing renovation; Stratford Park, 1945; the 'mission', probably Te Whaiti, 1930; interior of Te Arai mission church near Gisborne, 1934; and Hyde's Motor Camp, Paraparaumu, 1936. Images include a trip to Rotorua, Waikaremoana and to the opening of the wharenui 'Te Hono ki Rarotonga', Tokomaru Bay in January 1934; Wesley Methodist church, Hastings, after the 1931 earthquake; Hairini Anglican Church, Te Awamutu, 1936; and Jubilee Park, Lower Hutt, 1943. Images relating to the railways include many prints and postcards of various locomotives, images of the railway workshops, and of a train derailment near Belmont Quarry, Lower Hutt, 1943. Images include a trip to Maungapohatu, 1930, Teschemaker's Oamaru stone quarry, 1927; the porcelain works, Benhar; buried forest, Arapuni, circa 1929; pipeline and Mangahao Power Station; road construction; the summit of Rimutaka Road, 1932; interior of Hui-te-Rangiora Church, Puketeraki; several house including 'Orama', Fowlds Avenue, Mount Albert, Baker Street, Caversham, and 'Bill's house' (probably Bill Godber), Napier. Photographs relating to locomotives and the railways include the old Thomas Transmission Rail Motor RM-2 converted into a house; the S 214 locomotive circa 1890 with named employees, and the railways workshops. Description: "We" steam locomotive 198, originally built as "B" class 198, converted to We class 4-6-4T type in 1902, and renumbered "We" 376 in 1942. Probably photographed by Stanley Arthur Rockliff, negative copied by Albert Percy Godber, probably circa 1902. An original print is in Godber Album Vol 108, p 59 (PA1-q-101) Inscriptions: Album page - bottom centre - We. 1902.; Album page - centre left - We 375. 1944. A S Rockliff. "We" 198 was originally built as "B" 198 (4-8-0 type) by Sharp Stewart (maker's no 4509/99), and went into service in December 1899. Description: "Kb" 969, a Kb class steam locomotive, 4-8-4 type, probably photographed by Stanley Arthur Rockliff, ca 1940. A similar print to this image is at PA1-q-101 (Godber Album vol 108, page 110). Caption below print reads "A S Rockliff". It is possible the photograph was taken by Stanley Arthur Rockliff who was a Founding Member of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society, and Vice-President of the Dunedin Branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Union from its inception in 1956. "Kb" 969 was built in 1939 (maker's no. 352/39) by New Zealand Railways, Hillside Workshops, and was written off in 1967. Dunedin; Album page - bottom right - A.S. Rockliff Forty "J" class steam locomotives were built in 1939 by the North British Locomotive Company, Glasgow, and all were in NZ by early 1940.
